Cycling Day 5

  • by

Tuesday March 12 | São Pedro de Moel to São Martinho do Porto | 36km

Nazaré

THE BROCHURE DESCRIPTION: Leaving São Pedro de Moel you will ride the cycle path heading south to Sitio da Nazaré and passing the entrances to the beaches made famous beach in 2012 when Hawaiian Garrett McNamara broke the world record for the biggest wave ever surfed, with 30 meters height.  Not long after you’ll reach Sítio da Nazaré, a village perched on top of the cliffs that sit on the northern edge of the Nazaré beach with an amazing view over Nazaré, the beach and the ocean. After exiting Nazaré you will tackle a hilly section climbing up from the rice fields and along the ocean to the old windmill. After going down you will arrive at the amazing and unique São Martinho do Porto bay, an ocean lagoon cloistered by cliffs.

OUR JOURNEY: they failed to mention the hills out of Sao Pedro and our legs were feeling yesterday’s 82 km!

Nazaré was a highlight because we were big fans of the documentary 100 ft Wave.  https://youtu.be/znCNT-9k_Ws No big waves today but what a lovely town. Cliffs, churches and miles of beach. Trip notes warned of the big climb out of Nazaré and they weren’t kidding.

Our town for the night is just as pretty and again, we are lucky enough to have a corner room on the top floor with a terrace and view. Simply beautiful here.

The next three days are all hills so the fun begins.
