CYCLE DAY 4 / VIZ

TOUR NOTES

Distance: 31km / Total Ascent/Descent: 683m

This morning we set sail towards the island of Vis. This is one of the most remote inhabited islands and is blessed with a more temperate climate than the mainland (warmer in winter, cooler in summer). It has a deserved reputation for producing extremely good food and wine, and the restaurants offer the freshest fish in the Adriatic. Vis has been used over the centuries as a strategic military port and saw action by the Allied military through WWII. Today it is an idyllic island, famous for its authentic and relaxed way of life.

Everything they mention about Viz is true. It is a lovely place because there are few tourists. It’s too far out to be on most vacation tours. Our guide’s family lived here until the Balkan conflict. He had some great stories about their life here.

More hills but definitely more manageable. The downhills were thrilling! The highlight at a rest stop was seeing the Allied base where they defended the island from the Nazis. The island was strategic to control access to the region. Besides the airstrip, which you can see as a big rectangle used as farmland, (top of the photo) they also left behind a cricket pitch.

Legend has it that there are miles of underground tunnels on the Island that were used during the war.

Sadly we couldn’t moor here for the night, so we made the crossing to our next island in some very tough seas. Our big lunch on board did not sit well.

The sun has been out all day so it’s been a great day.

Good night from Vela Luka.
