Why the “Lloyd” Series? These hand crafted letterpress and linocut posters celebrate Lloyd’s love of the BC outdoors. These vintage maps were gifted to me by his son Steve and wife Vicki. What better use for them than to give them new life as artwork and share them.
Born in 1949, from an early age Lloyd loved getting outdoors and getting outside. As a teenager he took up fly fishing near his home in Victoria. His love of nature led him to a biology degree and he took a job with the BC provincial government in the Ministry of Environment. He progressed through many positions with the ministry, which took him to different locations in the province, but always in his job he loved nothing more than the field work that took him out to the woods and lakes of BC. He married twice, having two sons from his first marriage with Janice and and two sons and a daughter that Vicki brought to the second marriage. Away from work Lloyd’s hobbies universally took him outside. He hunted and fished throughout the province but he especially looked forward to annual trips to hunt in the interior of BC where he would spend days hiking and seeking elk in the valleys and mountains of the Kootenay region. He fished lakes and rivers throughout the province, tying flies to match local hatches and seeking steelhead in winter rivers. He loved salmon fishing in the waters off the east and west coasts of Vancouver Island, He spent many days on the water in his yellow Mirrorcraft – a humble aluminum boat that saw more fish than most more well appointed boats. He kept bees, and eventually owned a small farm in Lantzville with Vicki where they cared for many animals and maintained a large garden. He shared this love of the outdoors with all of his children, who have cherished memories of time spend outside with Lloyd. In his later years Lloyd was able to purchase the larger boat he always wanted, and moved back to Campbell River, the city known as the salmon capital of the world. Though he is unable to travel the way he once did, Lloyd still loves to talk about the outdoors and hasn’t lost his love of the wild places and creatures he has always sought out.
