Bird Trek

Day 8: Mar 28, 2025
Tour Notes: Monteverde Cloud Forest Tour
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve covers 3,500 hectares and contains some 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity across four distinct ecological life zones. Each zone hosts unique ecosystems inhabited by a vast array of mammals, birds, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, insects, arachnids, mosses, epiphytes, lianas, and trees.

Today was lovely, not just because we were going into the forest, but also because it was our first day without rain! The sun was out and you could actually see the views from our balconies. We are on the other side of the volcano from where we were in La Fortuna. On a clear day we can see the Pacific Ocean.

Our forest trek today was a game of hide and seek with the birds. We could hear them, but finding them was a whole other thing. I don’t know how the guides do it, but we were not disappointed. A highlight was finding both a male and female quetzal.

Also spotted.

Besides the birds there were frogs, squirrels and some very big trees.

All of our rooms are gorgeous with balconies over the trees. Vince and Allison had to be moved and the only available room was a big suite with living room, hot tub and a giant hanging bed out on the balcony. As a bonus, a rainbow came out during our happy hour out there. A great day.

Saturday, we head to the Pacific side for a week in the beach town of Jaco. There we join the rest of the group. Should be interesting as 27 of us celebrate over 45 years of friendship and a year of milestone birthdays. Posts will be sporadic from here on in.
