Centuries old Processes creating modern goods
LETTERPRESS
Letterpress goes way back to the 15th century. It uses a relief shape (in this case a letterform) inked up and pressed onto a piece of paper, transferring the message. The relief letter forms were originally carved from wood and later cast in lead. Much of my work uses my vintage collection of both wood and metal type along with hand carved lino image blocks. Works are printed on my 1950’s Kelsey 5″ x 8″ platen press or my larger bed proofing press.

NATURE SERIES
The new series of “nature books” is an exploration into non traditional book forms using nature as the foundation. What makes a book a book? Although somewhat unconventional, these pieces still function as traditional books while also being objects of art. The work is heavily influenced by the beauty of nature here on the island, using materials like bark, driftwood and rocks collected on walks and hikes. Each piece is a unique combination of these elements, carefully crafted to embody the organic textures and shapes found around us. The paper inside is often recycled from other books, packaging or hand dyed. Pages are then hand-shaped to become integrated into the covers.
The Log Book – Totally impractical but so precious.
